The Best SharePoint User Guide on the Market

I know this book was a bit late to get on the scene, June 5th. Let me tell you, this book was well worth the wait! I've had the chance to read other beginning SharePoint books and user guides, specifically SharePoint 2007 User's Guide: Learning Microsoft's Collaboration and Productivity Platform and Microsoft SharePoint 2007 For Dummies, and none of them lay it out for the end users as well as this book does.

The book is filled with easy to follow examples with step-by-step instructions that make it easy to implement your own team solutions.

My favorite chapters are 6, 10, 11, and 12; Content Types, Forms Services, Excel Services, and the BDC, respectively. None of these chapters are longer than 50 pages, but they are filled to the brim with so much useful information that you will read them from beginning to end.

This book is the definitive SharePoint user's guide.

Must Have for SharePoint Designers

This is the best book on the market for learning how the newest versions of SharePoint can help company's improve business processes and information management.

From getting a solid understanding of content types and site columns (new features within SharePoint) to making use of Forms Services, the reader gains knowledge of how to use these important concepts to create business solutions that are easy to maintain and extend.

Because SharePoint is so open and powerful, easily explaining how to incorporate SharePoint to help a company run its business more efficiently is challenging. To take full advantage of SharePoint, companies will need employees that are not developers (programmers) to embrace the technology. These users will need to know how to utilize SharePoint to meet business objectives, and how to customize the platform (without the need for code). I've read a lot of books about Sharepoint and MOSS and actually I can say that this is my personal "top of the list" for ayone who wants to be introduced into the Sharepoint and MOSS world.
The book is simple to read and rich of guided samples, it covers all the aspects you need in order to start working with Sharepoint and MOSS.
If you're a developer that wants to customize the engine, this is not the right book for you... but if you've the needs to learn Sharepoint and to work immediately with it, this is extremely recommended.

More fun with David and Sarah, and zombies!!

In Eat Slay Love we rejoin my favorite post zombie apocalypse married couple, Sarah and David, as they attempt to get to the rumored "Wall" in the east, hoping to find safety from the society that's let them down. I mean, zombies are the ultimate letdown, right? Of course, with these two, you know it's not gonna be smooth sailing, and the seas get pretty rough during this outing. See, there was an incident in the last novel that might have changed David a bit, and Sarah is noticing more and more, well, odd things about him. Sarah is also hoping she'll be reunited with her mom and dad, even though the chances of that are slim. All that aside, they've got some precious cargo with them that could change the face of the world forever. Add to the mix a stalkerazzi journalist that may have her own secret agenda, an aging rockstar that seems to have lost his band, and his wits, to the zombies, a camp full of people that aren't about to let strangers into the mix (think Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome here), and of course all the zombie killin' action you can handle, and you've got a read that you won't want to put down!
I adore this series, and it just keeps getting better and better. Sarah narrates with her trademark snark, and even though you'll giggle, you'll cringe too, because Ms. Petersen lets the dark humor fly, and the story is tempered with moments of levity that will definitely bring you down to earth. This kind of writing is hard to do, weaving humor into admittedly horrid situations, but the author manages with a sure hand and never lets the pacing falter. There are a few twists in this one that left me smiling and the ending leaves off with plenty of material for lots more fun with this kick-ass couple. Do they find the "wall"? Does Sarah reunite with her family? And just what is wrong with David? You'll get your questions answered in this one, I promise, and trust me, you won't want to put it down!

Another great addition to this series!

EAY SLAY LOVE, by Jesse Petersen, is the continuation of the Living with the Dead series following Sarah and David's journey to the "Wall" to (hopefully) get the only known zombie-cure to government scientists to end the zombie/human war. But as usual nothing is easy for this once-almost-divorced couple, they are faced with cults, David's strange new bitten-related behaviors, teaming up with a TMZ-like stalkerazzi, a druggie rockstar...and of course BRAAAAIIN eating zombies.

I have been dying to read this next installment of one of my favorite horror series's, and I have to say I was very pleased!! My favorite still-together (why are there not more of those in fiction?) couple is back with another huge adventure on their hands. I love the relationship between Sarah and David. They truly are my hero couple and I always get nervous when things (zombies, other cute men/women, zombie escape routes involving splitting up) threaten to tear them apart.

I liked how Petersen developed the cure senario with David. He was cured but subtle differences in his behavior suggested he became some sort of zombie/super human hybrid. And Sarah found tooth and nail to keep her once nerd, now buff husband by her side.

The other main characters, Nicole and McCray were annoying at first (probably because I thought they were going to get Sarah and David killed) but they grew on me as the book wore on. A big theme in this book was secrets. Sarah kept the cure a secret, and as I slowly learned more about Nicole and McCray I knew that all kept secrets would blow up in the characters faces at some point.

One thing (of many) that I love about this series is that there are multiple layers to each book. The overall one being to survive, but I love how Petersen makes little adventures and journeys (physically and mentally) for her characters. It really makes this series enjoyable to read. Definitely pick this one up!

A fun romp through the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse

Yeah, I know, it doesn't seem like the words "fun" and "zombie apocalypse" ought to be found in the same sentence, but Eat, Slay, Love really was a fun summer beach-type read. Clearly, a good sense of humor makes even a zombie apocalypse more bearable. I thought the tone of the book was somewhat similar to that of MaryJanice Davidson's Undead series.

A friend loaned me this book and I started it without realizing that it was the third book in the series. The fact that I had not read the first two books did not interfere with my enjoyment of the third, but I did immediately order book 1 from Amazon and have the second and fourth (last?) books on my Wish List.

If you like books about zombies and appreciate a heroine who is always ready with a quip or sarcastic remark, I recommend this book - although I kind of wish I had started with the first one and read them in order.

The Mediterranean's Frontier

Professor Andrew Hess has written an excellent biography of the moving frontier between Catholic Spain and Islamic North Africa. "Biography" is an acceptable label - his story is full of people who moved or were moved by the many forces (geographic, demographic, proto-nationalist, millennialist to name a few) that profoundly influenced Mediterranean history at the close of the 16th century. In this respect, and as the author indicates early, the book is a counter to Fernand Braudel's sweeping and monumental study of the region. Hess is firmly in the camp of differences and distinctions between cultures, as opposed to unity and consolidation.

Hess begins the study appropriately with a review of the military revolution of the 15th and 16th centuries. The changes in weaponry, army size and composition, and expense were probably the single most important factors of change influencing the region. His analysis is good for its time (1978 - ten years before Geoffrey Parker's The Military Revolution), and it sets the stage neatly for the rest of the narrative.

A critical analytical point that Hess makes is the fact that Iberia actually had two frontiers, Atlantic and Mediterranean. By the 16th century, the Atlantic was ascendent economically, culturally, and intellectually. This explains much of why the Spanish monarchies of Charles V and Philip II were content merely to outpost themselves in North Africa as opposed to expanding the reconquista across the Straits of Gibraltar. The resurgence of Islamic civilization, and the arrival of the Ottoman Turks in the central and western parts of the basis certainly contributed to this outlook. In many respects, the violence of the last acts between Christian and Muslim in the late 1400s simply made close intercourse undesirable for both sides. Although military conflict continued between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires, a strategy of elmination was never seriously contemplated. So long as Philip could defend Iberia, and the Sultan could defend Islam in North Africa, a modus vivendi developed allowing both empires to turn in other, more profitable, directions.

A great strength of Hess's work is the use of Arabic and Ottoman sources, both literary and documentary. The perspective is balanced and his judgements are fair. The analysis of North Africa is especially interesting -- how Morocco came to establish and defend its independence is a fascinating story that helps to illuminate the region's politics and social issues even today.

As a last point, the Ibero-African frontier may be forgotten in a literary historical sense, but personal observation has demonstrated that at the micro level, at least in the early 21st century, the frontier is very much alive. How curious it is for a foreign traveler to see highway and roadside signs in southern Spain written in Arabic - or to view the magnificent white-washed mosque sitting on the southermost tip of Europa Point; from here, Ceuta is visible on a clear day, only a dozen or so miles across the straits.

Best Pizza Cookbook of the Year!

As a professional pizzeria owner, this book is my favorite of the year! I've made at least five of these pies for my customers and they loved them. This book is easy to use, innovative, pizza-specific and upbeat without the pomposity of cookbooks from "know-it-all" chefs. I especially like the way that other small pizzerias across the country are represented here. The corn crust is now my go-to vehicle for all my southwest style pies and I am definitely stealing the Finocchio pizza with this delicious fennel jam as mine! Here's my version of Craig's fabulous Grilled Pear and Bacon Pizza, (I added some Stilton)

Home cooks, pull out your pizza stones! This is a terrific book. I would say that the Deep Dish Reuben Pizza is one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten (not only in the pizza category!) The Chunky Tomato Sauce recipe is magical. There is a pizza for everyone here--classic, innovative, deep, thin, gluten-full and gluten-free. I am happy to have it on my shelf and need no other pizza book.

And, don't eat the fish....

Ever since Jeffrey Sachs hit me between the eyes with a two-by-four with The Price of Civilization I have been devouring every book I can find on the subject of the American voter who seems to be voting the country into destruction by ignoring what is happening all around us. The spotlight seems to have settled on the segment of society described in White Trash, Hillbilly Elegy, Thomas Frank's book about Kansas and a number of others, all attempting to understand what we now see as a Trump supporter. Strangers in Their Own land, in my opinion, is one of the best of these books I have read. The author is different in that she has much more compassion for her subjects and does not sink to ridicule out of exasperation...a common reflex when people seem to be acting against all reason and prudence...but she makes a real effort to understand them and the source of this perplexing behavior. I have learned that there is no arguing with their point of view, but for those of us trying to make sure that we ourselves are not losing our minds, the statistical information in this book is clear and relevant and to me, worth the price of the book.

A fairly objective look at the inner workings of Louisiana's political and industrial culture

I took a particular interest in this book because I am actually from Lake Charles and grew up there, until leaving at 17 to join the Navy. I felt the author did a fair job in setting the scene. At first she made it sound like a primitive back-woods kind of place, but eased into a more flattering depiction once she was talking to some of the local people. That's what makes South La great anyway, the people. The book offers several interesting paradoxes: the main paradox of why people are so right-leaning, big government hating in a state that relies so heavily on federal subsidies, and also the juxtaposition of people needing big industry for their livelihoods, but also hating that they have to live with its pollution and corruption within the state government. She uses a lot of statistics and facts to make her points, and for the most part, I found it's an objective analysis of the state and explaining it's political leaning.

The Great Paradox Personified

I have been fortunate to become familiar with the places and people of Louisiana described in this book and I can't begin to express how grateful I am to the author for delving into explaining "the great paradox". I am Californian born and raised and originally traveled to southwest Louisiana to pick up an accordion made by Mark Savoy in Eunice LA. I keep returning because the people I met, and friends I made, are as kind, gentle, open and intelligent as the folks described here. But, try as I might to reconcile the differences in our social/political views I failed....until I read this book! Thank-you Arlie Russell Hochschild for offering this bridge between the right and the left. Fellow MSNBC watchers, after reading this book I urge you to visit southwest Louisiana yourself - you will never view "the South" or Southerners, the same.
