You've got to be kidding me....
By J. Davis
I bought this book in the airport book shop while traveling to an appointment, the book was so simple and simpleminded that I needed and air sick bag. This is so 1980;s style of selling that has nothing to do with real corporate sales. This should be a book they give in high school business class as they say those that can do and those that can't teach. I have closed million dollar deals over breakfast, got on a plane and closed another deal the next day with a large retail chain CEO. It amazes ne how many corporations buy into this a training model. Goes to show you why big companies are not making thier comps, profits and handeling the right customers. Ethics are long gone for sales, it's just sell it and worry about the problems later. If I used these inane tools in my headquarter calls my business would not be what it is today. I would like to know who her largest customers were? What really did she sell? What was her biggest deal other than BS.

2. Explore - ask good questions and find their need(s).
3. Leverage - after finding their need(s), show how your product/service can satisfy the need.

This is the way I was taught to sell many years ago. I've gotten so good that I have forgotten many of the primary techniques that are the fundamentals of sales. I bought copies for all of my sales guys. Very good tool.

My First Foray Into Roman History and I've Never Been the Same Since
By Fred W. Anson (aka "Mr. IT")
This is a combined review for the audiobook editions of both "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God" by Robert Graves.

Like so many others, I was drawn to these books after watching the 1976 PBS adaption which enthralled and intrigued me. This was my first foray into Roman history and I've never been the same since. That said, for those (like me) comparing Jack Pulman's screenplay to the actual book will be both impressed and disgusted. Mr. Pulman certainly got all the plot points but in the process of doing do took some curious "liberties" with both the source material and (I've come to find out) history itself. I won't disappoint the reader by revealing of to what exactly I'm referring - better if you ferret it out yourself, I think.

So how are the books, you may ask? Simply amazing. I know it's a cliche' but the books are most definitely better than the movie. And Derek Jacobi's reading is just as inspired and delightful as his screen performance was as Claudius in the PBS mini-series. I enjoyed them both immensely and will, no doubt, be taking another trip through them both again.

Finally I am a Christian, and as a final note to my fellow believers I encourage these books and/or the PBS television series for no other reason than to put the New Testament in historical context from the Roman side. I think you'll find, as I did, your depth, breadth, and understanding of the Gospels, Book of Acts, and the epistles exploding as you work through Mr. Grave's fine research and writing.

Highest recommendation. These books are classics!

Brings early imperial characters vividly to life.
By SCOTT M WILSON
Really nice piece of historical fiction. Brings early imperial characters vividly to life. Claudius as a character is a great vehicle for this clever narrative.

I initially picked up the story as a pre-Italy vacation book. Now I can't wait to see the room from "Villa Livia" in the Museo Nazionale Romano (Palazzo Massimo Alle Terme). What a wonderfully monstrous character she was!

The beginning of the book flew by, then it got a bit bogged down until Caligula took power toward the last stretch of the book. He was worth the wait - what a terror. Some of the names are tough to follow. Lots of characters zip by, but the author does a good job of jogging your recollection of some of the recurring or important minor ones.

Having savored the completion of the book for a couple of days now, I think the things that will stay with me are:

--> how familiar tyranny is whenever it occurs in history
--> how interesting that this was written in the 1930s with fascism on the rise
--> Caligula was totally outrageous - but familiar at the same time
--> how remarkable it is that some people ever assume power -- perhaps few so remarkable as poor Claudius
--> wow - the power of poison

What can I say -- Robert Graves was an utter genius!
By Stephanie L. Thompson
First, let me explain about the sexual content: It is not vivid, does not take up much of the narrative, and is definitely not a reason to keep your child from reading the book if you happen to be blessed with a child who wants to read something beyond Hunger Games and the subsequent rip-offs of Hunger Games.

I first knew of Robert Graves for his poetry and for a marvelous historical work of his, The Long Weekend, which is among my favorite history books. When I came across this work of his, I was intrigued because the Julio-Claudians have always seemed to me to be the most interesting of Rome's dynasties. I think it's because of the dynamic women involved behind the scenes and not-so-behind the scenes.

What Graves has done here is to take incredibly well-researched history and turn it into a novel that is amazingly factual (he really doesn't make up much so much as he speculates a bit -- and frankly, his speculations are probably right considering his vast knowledge of the period) and yet also compelling and vivid. Claudius, one of the saner Julio-Claudians (this being the dynasty that brought us Nero and Caligula) is the narrator, telling the story of his incredible grandmother Livia and how she secretly was the true power ruling Rome -- and also, incidentally, an incredibly depraved and evil woman, too! It goes into the deep, personal stories behind a great many Romans with whom most people only experience a momentary grade school acquaintance. The writing style has a very appealing sarcastic humor at times, though most of the book is more of a drama than a comedy.

I would highly recommend this to anyone with even the slightest interest in Roman history, or just anyone who likes a really well-written narrative. Having taught high school for several years, I can also with confidence recommend this as a great book for teens and preteens. If you have a son or daughter preparing to take AP World History, this would be an excellent summer reading book to help him/her prepare to leap into the course (and, again, the vast majority of the book is actually true, so it can make great fodder for fleshing out an essay better in the heat of an AP exam).

Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person, by Shonda Rhimes

The mega-talented creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away With Murder chronicles how saying YES for one year changed her life―and how it can change yours, too.

With three hit shows on television and three children at home, the uber-talented Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say NO when an unexpected invitation arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No.

And there was the side-benefit of saying No for an introvert like Shonda: nothing new to fear.

Then Shonda’s sister laid down a challenge: just for one year, try to say YES to the unexpected invitations that come your way. Shonda reluctantly agreed―and the result was nothing short of transformative. In Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes chronicles the powerful impact saying yes had on every aspect of her life―and how we can all change our lives with one little word. Yes.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of November 2015: I usually shy away from books with titles like Year of Yes – hokey, I think, or glib. Besides, I don’t need a self-help manual; I like to take my self-empowerment lying down, on the couch. Except… except that Rhimes, the creator/producer of such intelligent TV shows as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal is not only wiser, funnier, and cooler than your average therapist – she’s also been there, if “there” is the land of the angry, scared and emotionally dysfunctional. Never mind that she graduated from Dartmouth, is a proud and loving mother to her three kids, AND owns Thursday night TV, Rhimes was a mess until her sister made a chance remark at Thanksgiving – “You never say Yes to anything.” That’s when Rhimes decided not only to face her fears but to hug the life out of them. (OK, so some of her fears involve wearing a Carolina Herrera dress, gorgeous shoes and showing up at a star-studded benefit… but hey, fears is fears.) Rhimes found that saying Yes sometimes, paradoxically, also meant saying no, too – as in, and this is my version, Yes, I want to be a thin person. No I don’t want to eat a whole pecan pie in one sitting because I’m more lonely than hungry. She also discovered that self-acceptance doesn’t always go smoothly: as she pithily observes, sometimes the people who loved you when you were angry, dark and “twisty” don’t like to hang around when you lighten up. So what, she says. At least you’ve figured out how to live more or less happily ever after -- with yourself. – Sara Nelson

Review
“Small, charmingly odd, inspirational stories…Quite simply, it's a book about how she learned to take care of herself, and how you might be able to as well. Welcome your new life coach, Shonda Rhimes.”
— Vulture

“Rhimes is, unsurprisingly, a fantastic memoirist: Her writing is conversational and witty and lyrical, inflected with the supple human breathiness you might expect from a person who spends her days writing dialogue. It features lots of great punchlines…It features occasional, chatty, second person asides…[It] is also in many ways a side door self help book…[with] pieces of advice that concern not just Rhimes’s readers, but everyone. …Year of Yes is a book about the shifts taking place in Hollywood right now,and in the world right now, in the guise of a friendly memoir. It is, like Shondaland itself, making a statement. It is insisting that it is time for the people who used to be invisible to come forward and be seen.”
—Atlantic.com

“A powerful memoir and self help book that promotes saying "Yes!" to life…[Rhimes] shares some of the key beliefs and events behind this transformation, all with good humor and vivid prose. Rhimes comes across as inspiring and real, every bit the heroine whom readers need to inspire such a change in themselves.”
— Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Revealing and delightful.”
— New York Daily News

“There’s real value in the experiences Rhimes shares… When, for example, she discusses learning to take better care of herself, the memoir feels honest, raw and revelatory.”
— The Washington Post

“A sincere and inspiring account of saying yes to life…Rhimes tells us all about it in the speedy, smart style of her much loved TV shows. She's warm, eminently relatable, and funny… Like a cashmere shawl you pack just in case, Year of Yes is well worth the purse space, and it would make an equally great gift. Rhimes said "yes" to sharing her insights . Following her may not land you on the cover of a magazine, but you'll be glad you did.”
—Kirkus

“If you enjoy the rapid fire dialogue of her characters, reading this book will feel like home. Rhimes opens up, and inspires, discussing her personal experiences as a sister, daughter, mother, friend and boss tempered with biting insights on societal expectations of women…[a] blend of biography and badassery.”
— Ebony.com

“Rhimes guides the reader through her transformative yearlong experiment, each chapter dealing with a different personal challenge for herself, and she lets us deep inside her brain, carefully laying out all of her fears and self doubt…candid and friendly, almost as if the two of you were catching up over drinks.”
— Slate.com

“A mix of humor and conversational real talk…written with dashes of Oprah esque inspiration but the no B.S. frankness of, say, Dr. Cristina Yang from Grey's Anatomy…Even if Rhimes's fame and career don't make her an everywoman, she writes with an everywomanly sensibility…her words brim with such life that by the end of the book, some readers may find themselves wanting to say yes to more things, too.”
—TVInsider.com

“Rhimes' familiar, conversational writing style makes the book a more accessible Lean In,a self help book and personal journal all rolled into one.”
—TVGuide.com

“A self help book dressed in casual clothes, lessons for living a better life told through relatable personal essays from the woman who set out to, in the course of a year, make her own better… There’s an uncanny familiarity to the journey Rhimes goes on… Never do you feel preached at while reading Rhimes’s book. This woman of huge fame and fortune is speaking directly to you, and she’s doing it with familiarity, humor, and earned wisdom…Year of Yes is an awakening as much as it is a reckoning. Recognize the power of what you’ve been doing. Do more of it.”
— Daily Beast

"It’s like having a mini Shonda in your head, encouraging you to go for it. And say ‘it’s handled.’"
— The Skimm (Skimm Reads pick)

“Shamelessly entertaining…an antic, funny and surprisingly funky portrait of what it’s like to be one of the most fascinating forces in contemporary network television.”
— Buffalo News (Editor's Choice Review)

“This memoir/call to arms from the one woman force behind Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder is basically a New Year’s resolution between two covers. Wherever you’re going, bring it with you.”
— Bloomberg Businessweek

“Amazing…The title alone is giving us heart eyes… Life is full of opportunities and chances that we’ve can’t even imagine. That’s the core message of empowerment in Shonda’s new book, and we’re behind it one hundred percent. ALL OF THE YES to Year of Yes.”
—HelloGiggles

“Instead of writing passionate narratives for her TV characters, Rhimes adopted their pluck and bold attitudes and attacked life with a new sense of purpose…Who knew that such a small word could have such a life changing impact? By saying “yes,” she learned to dance it out and stand in the sun. Dr. Cristina Yang would be soproud.”
—Associated Press

“Year of Yes is as fun to read as Rhimes' TV series are to watch. Her authorial voice is fresh and strong."
—Los Angeles Times

“Can help motivate even the most determined homebody to get out and try something new in the New Year.”
—Chicago Tribune

“A book that is fun, dishy and inspirational all at the same time…a powerful book, a great gift for a friend or yourself, whether you’re a fan of the Shondaland lineup or not.”
—Motherlode/NYTimes.com

“Brilliant…a peek into Rhimes' wise, funny, surprisingly candid brain, which contains opinions on everything from accepting compliments and balancing showrunning with single motherhood to, yes, the recent weight loss that's been (unfairly) making the most headlines. By the end of journey in The Year of Yes, you'll feel like you've gained a new best friend.”
—Women & Hollywood/ Indiewire.com

“You’ll want to standup and cheer when she takes control, remakes her life, and learns to loveherself.”
—Buzzfeed.com

Why Shonda Rhimes is the Queen of all she surveys...
By BookLover
I don't really stalk Shonda Rhimes (although I will break traffic laws to get home in time to live tweet Scandal every Thursday night), but when Shonda speaks I do tend to listen. so I was hot on Amazon downloading this book the day it was released. And this is a praiseworthy, life affirming, sister-centric, love filled, thank you Jesus!, Where-has-this-book been-all-of-my-life kind of read. So why is Shonda the unstoppable, irrepressible Queen of all she surveys? Let me count the ways:

1) First off, unlike a lot of authors, she did not pre-seed Amazon with preselected reviewers hitting up all 5 stars and offering formulaic praise. When I signed on this morning there were 3 reviews versus the 20-30 replicant reviews you often see when a new book is released. Why? Because she doesn't need forced praise. The book is good. Very good. And like Shonda herself, it doesn't need fabricated self promotion but can stand on it's own merits.

2) She's funny. Like laughing out loud in public funny. Like people changing seats on the bus because you're smiling and snickering to yourself funny. Like spitting up coffee and pastry on the Kindle screen funny. You get the point.

3) In addition to being funny, she's pitch perfect in her capacity to convey authenticity, vulnerability, and confidence all within the same paragraph.

4) She's also wicked smart and genuinely compassionate. Sadly those two traits sometimes don't travel in pairs.

5) Her year of living fearlessly by fully stepping into her life and saying YES inspires because it shows that even a Shonda Rhimes can suffer from the "Who Me?" disease that afflicts so many women. Granted, Shonda needed to say yes to things like hanging out with the Obama's or being honored as a Human Rights Boss, but she brilliantly shows that despite the loftiness of her life, like many of us she too struggled with stepping into her well earned right to "stand in the sun" without fear or apology.

6) And like a good and righteous Queen, she shares the glow. She has done more than any other TV writer in history to celebrate, and as she says normalize, ALL human experiences by merely allowing people of all orientations, races, and ethnicities to BE and To do and say human things on television. Radical inclusiveness...what a concept.

I could go on, but really just read the book. Worth every ducket.

A smart, touching, funny must-read
By A. Cavoulacos
Year of Yes, is a must read for so many reasons. Shonda shares her journey with such humor, vulnerability and authenticity that you feel like you were with her for this incredible ride she took as she challenged herself to be more, do more, and live a full life. For anyone who's given in to fear, or gotten a little too comfortable (aka all of us), read this.

Loved the book!
By CINDYKUHLMAN
As a never married mother of two young ladies who loves red wine, is very shy and introverted but yet is a successful business woman I highly recommend this book.
I could appreciate her stories especially since I have had many of the same exact thoughts and feelings with regard to speaking in public and venturing out of my comfort zone. I was so nervous about giving a speech in New York that I didn't realize until the plane landed that I wore two different shoes. Although my struggle with shyness continues I am inspired by her ability to work through her issues.
I especially loved her comments about being a mother and not getting married. I plan to use her words "my happy ending is not the same as your happy ending" when people ask me why I am not married.
I have read other reviews about the writing style and language in the book but I thought it helped to connect the readers to her and her story.

Perfect book for the beginners
By Charles Walters
This book surprised me with all it's stuff. It is written specially for children in order to introduce them with all the extraordinary features of Minecraft. Although it's not only the solution for a gamer who likes to play Minecraft but perfect for the beginners. The beginners can learn from the basic to the building useful structure seeing the included pictures easily. All the rules and procedures, pre or pro, of the game are described here step by step so that a new one can learn easily and survive in the Minecraft world. The author didn't forget to include few Minecraft pro-tips essential for every stage of the game. I enjoyed this book.

Written for kids. A bit too long for kids. But entertaining writing from start to finish!
By Cody
I play a bit of Minecraft and so does my 10-year old son (not ashame guys! It's an educational tool mind you!) Was curious on how an 80+ page book is suitable for kids. Maybe it was targeting the middle ground but that was quickly put to rest when I saw the first page. Teaching you how to navigate the main menu. Yep this is a book for kids alright and then the author went on to some kiddy talk here and there like the guide really wants to hold your hand and make you feel comfortable. I think it is a great approach to get kids in the mood to play even though my son laughed at some parts. I give an "A" for the effort. Shy of an A+ because it's a guide targeted for kids but a wee bit too long and somehow talks about some advanced topics in a kiddy way.

Minecraft in a pinch
By Rhaenys
Looking for a game you can play long term? Not sure how to play it? Cool with pixelated graphics? Minecraft it is. The book is the basic know how on the game. I don't even know how to play minecraft and reading through, I now have a pretty good grasp on how to play it. The pictures are definitely helpful in case you can't see what the author is referring to. It's like playing a different kind of the sims. The items you will encounter in the game and how to deal with creatures or so are also included in the handbook which is really helpful. There are also reminders on where you shouldn't go so that's neat, but if you're curious.... get the book. There's a whole lot more inside.

The Red Tent - 20th Anniversary Edition: A Novel, by Anita Diamant

A New York Times Bestseller

A decade after the publication of this hugely popular international bestseller, Picador releases the tenth anniversary edition of The Red Tent.

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that tell of her father, Jacob, and his twelve sons.

Told in Dinah's voice, Anita Diamant imagines the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood--the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of the mothers--Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah--the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through childhood, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past.

Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's lives.

Amazon.com Review
The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.

"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember." Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. --Gail Hudson

From Library Journal
Skillfully interweaving biblical tales with events and characters of her own invention, Diamant's (Living a Jewish Life, HarperCollins, 1991) sweeping first novel re-creates the life of Dinah, daughter of Leah and Jacob, from her birth and happy childhood in Mesopotamia through her years in Canaan and death in Egypt. When Dinah reaches puberty and enters the Red Tent (the place women visit to give birth or have their monthly periods), her mother and Jacob's three other wives initiate her into the religious and sexual practices of the tribe. Diamant sympathetically describes Dinah's doomed relationship with Shalem, son of a ruler of Shechem, and his brutal death at the hands of her brothers. Following the events in Canaan, a pregnant Dinah travels to Egypt, where she becomes a noted midwife. Diamant has written a thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating portrait of a fascinating woman and the life she might have lived. Recommended for all public libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
Cubits beyond most Woman-of-the-Bible sagas in sweep and vigor, this fictive flight based on the Genesis mention of Dinah, offspring of Jacob and Leah, disclaims her as a mere ``defiled'' victim and, further, celebrates the ancient continuity and unity of women. Dinah was the cherished only daughter of ``four mothers,'' all of whom bore sons by Jacob. It is through daughters, though, that the songs, stories, and wisdom of the mothers and grandmothers are remembered. Dinah tells the mothers' tales from the time that that shaggy stranger Jacob appears in the land of his distant kin Laban. There are Jacob's marriages to the beautiful Rachel and the competent Leah, ``reeking of bread and comfort.'' Also bedded are Zilpah, a goddess worshipper who has little use for men, and tiny, dark, and silent Bilhah. Hard-working Jacob is considerate to the equally hard-working women, who, in the ``red tent''--where they're sequestered at times of monthly cycles, birthing, and illness--take comfort and courage from one another and household gods. The trek to Canaan, after Jacob outwits Laban, offers Dinah wonders, from that ``time out of life'' when the traveling men and women laugh and sing together, on to Dinah's first scent of a great river, ``heady as incense, heavy and dark.'' She observes the odd reunion of Jacob and Esau, meets her cruel and proud grandmother, and celebrates the women's rite of maturity. She also loves passionately the handsome Prince Shalem, who expects to marry her. Dinah's tale then follows the biblical account as Jacob's sons trick and then slaughter a kingdom. Diamant's Dinah, mad with grief, flees to Egypt, gives birth to a son, suffers, and eventually finds love and peace. With stirring scenery and a narrative of force and color, a readable tale marked by hortatory fulminations and voluptuous lamentations. For a liberal Bible audience with a possible spillover to the Bradley relationship. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

The red tent
By A Customer
It would appear that any book about interesting and perhaps unusual women generates much controversy among its readership ("Bitter Grounds" and "The Poisonwood Bible" come to mind). This book is no different. The Red Tent is loosely based on the Biblical story of Dinah, but it is a novel, not fact, even though it may be based in fact. Diamant even takes liberties with the Dinah story as it appears in Genesis in the Bible. However, it does appear to be thoroughly researched -- I found myself equally fascinated by descriptions of life during Biblical times as by the lives of the characters in the book. Unlike some of the other reviewers I didn't find this book to be anti-male. I and many women I know lead very different lives from our men and we too see them in a completely different light than they see themselves. We often laugh at them or paint them in an unflattering light, despite the fact that we love them. We are not, however, anti-male, just human and female. I suspect men amongst themselves discuss women in much the same way. I personally found this book full of thoughts and ideas that touched me deeply, especially since I am 40 years old, have had several children and have lived in foreign countries. Perhaps much younger people would have trouble identifiying some of the "human condition" scenarios in the book -- I don't know. Regardless, I have wholeheartedly recommended this book to several people and recommend it to you.

Astonishing tale!
By M. Desoer
This is, by far, one of the best books I have read in a long time, leaving me sorry that it was over. The writing is beautiful in its depiction of life, from the women's point of view, about 4000 years ago. It was so incredibly moving that I found myself in tears at several times -- something that does not happen often!
This tale is a possible story of the life of Jacob's daughter, Dinah, who barely is mentioned in the Old Testament. It starts with a recounting of Jacob's marriages to Dinah's mother, and her mother's three sisters, the births of the resulting children, and Dinah's youth, learning at her "mothers'" sides. It continues with Jacob's departure with his family and flocks from the lands of his father-in-law, and follows Dinah through her death. I don't want to say any more, because it would ruin the story.
The author does not suggest that this is the "real" story, or a "supplement" to the Bible. It is not a religious book, per se, but does discuss the God of Jacob's father and, in contrast, the multitude of gods worshipped by other cultures of the time. The story is meant to provide a possible tale of an otherwise minor character, and affords a glimpse into the women's world of that time, not usually covered in the Bible.
I cannot recommend this book more highly.

Rebuttal to May19th Review from Seattle
By Sherry L. Ross
I would like to take a moment to address some of the complaints made in the May 19th review. I did not experience THE RED TENT as male bashing. It's intent was to take a female view of the major women of the Old Testament and to breathe life into them. It is "over endowed" with a female viewpoint as a counterbalance to the bible's male view. Women in the BIBLE were often hardly more than property, so it is not too surprising that a fictionalized female character from this period might see men somewhat differently then we do. The BIBLE does portray Laban as a pretty disagreeable character, but in this book Jacob is portrayed as a tragic figure, not a negative figure. He is not the cause of the terrible massacre, but assumes the guilt of his tribe. Until then he is a respected male figure in the book. The women have their weak points as well. Rachel is vain, and the grandmother, Rebecca is a formidable figure of both arrogance and power. Isaac's trauma as a child, being nearly slaughtered by his own father, was treated with compassion. Diamant has Dinah speak of this trauma and how it left Isaac with a stutter for the rest of his life. Some of the women are weak in a way that makes them disagreeable. The carpenter husband of Dinah, Benia, is a truly admirable and loveable male figure and her young husband, the prince Shalem, slaughtered at the hands of her brothers, is as gentle and romantic a young man as you could want.
As to the continual reference to pregnancies and childbirth, I believe this had a deliberate intent. During biblical times, childbearing is what gave women power. It is natural to assume that women of that period would indeed be obssessed with their own ability to bring children into the world - especially women of strength who would be able determine ways to use that ability to some advantage. The very nature of the Red Tent, was that it bonded women in a way that as a group gave them more leverage. Their "mysterious" ways were kept from the men who were somewhat fearful of their rituals and knowledge of childbearing. This was a woman's main source of power in a life that was in many ways powerless. Being a mid wife was as close to a career as a woman could have and it commanded respect from everyone. You have to remember that men and women did lead very separare lives at that time. Another source of power, still "mysterious" to men, was the role of a priestess and ordainer. Rebecca had this role down to a science in order to insure her place of distinction in the ancient world. I present these ideas as a difference of opinion to the previous reviewer, who is of course entitled to her opinion. I had my book group meeting last night and our book of discussion was THE RED TENT, so these themes were very much on my mind and I felt compelled to respond.

Review

"…we now have a comparative anatomy and histology book that will be an indispensable reference source for laboratory animal veterinarians and biomedical researchers…the reader will benefit from a healthy sprinkling of physiology that is found throughout the book…it has my strongest recommendation as a ‘got to have it’ book."--Laboratory Animal Practitioner, March 2014 "This volume is an excellent resource with illustrative histological and anatomical figures, comprehensive and comparative descriptions, and recommended references. It will be especially useful to investigations using mice as models of human disease as well as to medical and veterinary pathologists."--Anticancer Research, Volume 33, Issue no. 5, May 2013 "Long overdue, the editors have assembled a vast array of knowledge, protocols, lab lore and practical advice in a concise, well illustrated, and easily accessible volume of practical comparative anatomy of the mouse and human. Students learning anatomy and histology at a practical level by the necessity of the mouse experiments in their laboratories will love this resource. I would recommend that any investigator asking a student, fellow or technician to do mouse necropsy and dissection should provide a copy of this book (and ideally further training in one of the nationally available or online courses in mouse pathology). Even for veterinary pathologists who are more familiar with comparative anatomy, the focus in their training is rarely on the mouse and never on the human. The strict inclusion of just these two species provides an important and practical simplification of critical issues in using the mouse to model human disease. This book is long overdue and much needed in any of the thousands of laboratories performing research with mice."--Alexander D. Borowsky, M.D., D.A.B.P., Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Center for Comparative Medicine, UC Davis, CA, USA "Given the importance of the laboratory mouse in safety assessment and risk assessment, this text on the comparative anatomy and histology of the mouse and human represents a unique and highly tangible contribution and essential tool for basic and clinical researchers, drug developers, and toxicologists. The authors of individual chapters provide excellent full color gross and photomicrographic depiction of mouse and human anatomy and histology accompanying a tersely written and comprehensive text dealing with the important anatomical and functional components of each organ system. The figures are clearly labeled with easy to understand legends. Tables detailing similarities and differences in cellular composition for each organ system are provided. Chapters are clearly written and organized for easy access to important comparative features of mouse and human anatomy. As an additional bonus, brief ‘Need-to-Know" snippets of take-away summary points are provided throughout each chapter. Each chapter is followed by a recommended reading list. I highly recommend this book."--R. R. Maronpot, DVM. MS, MPH. Chief of Laboratory of Experimental Pathology, NIEHS, NIH. (Retired). Maronpot Consulting LLC, Raleigh, NC, USA "Comparative Anatomy and Histology:  A Mouse and Human Atlas is an excellent resource for researchers using mouse models to study human disease.  The "need to know" bullets in each chapter are useful for the generalist with extensive detail that will prove useful to those needing more in-depth detail of the cellular structure of mouse and human tissues.  The color figures and anatomical drawings are of excellent quality.  A very useful feature is contrasting the differences between humans and the mouse.  This book will be an excellent resource to investigators in a variety of disciplines."--Gary A. Boorman, DVM, MS, PhD, Diplomate ACVP, Diplomate ACLAM, Diplomate ABT, Pathologist, Covance Laboratories, Inc., Chantilly, VA, USA "The editors and authors of this book have created a useful reference that can serve as a text for teaching the important comparative aspects of human and mouse histology and anatomy to medical and veterinary pathologists, as well as researchers using mouse models. Twenty-three chapters, organized by system and authored by a well-qualified stable of experts, provide a very comprehensive text, strengthened by large numbers of gross and microscopic images throughout the work. The juxtaposition of images and text for each species throughout the book provides a unique perspective that sets a new standard for comparative atlases. The extensive use of very well-rendered medical illustrations to supplement the high-quality microscopic and dissection photography will make this book a classic resource for pathologists, researchers and laboratory animal specialists throughout their careers…. The scope and completeness of this work makes an exhaustive review of every chapter or feature beyond the scope of any one reviewer, but the editors have done a yeoman’s job in striving for both completeness and consistent presentation…. This is a book that many scientists from a wide range of disciplines will want to have on their shelves or computers long into the future."--Lab Animal, August 2012, Volume 41, No. 8, Page 223 "The text is well written and divided into 23 chapters addressing each of the organ systems as well as basic techniques and approaches to evaluating mouse models. Each chapter begins with a general introduction to the organ system and its function(s) followed by detailed descriptions of the anatomy and histology. Each anatomic region within the organ system is subdivided and discussed both at the anatomic and histologic levels with diagrams, tables, and images. Although the target audience is experienced histologists and pathologists, the text occasionally digresses into details that seem more suited to a basic histology text (although distracting, it does not detract from the overall value). The image quality in the atlas is excellent, and there are many diagrams and tables summarizing comparative anatomy and histology for a given organ system. One feature I particularly liked were the ‘Need-to-know’ bullet points that highlighted specific differences between the mouse and human, which were located adjacent to the figures. In general, the bullet points clearly identified the species for which the points were intended. Occasionally, how- ever, the species was not defined and had to be ascertained from the figures with which it was affiliated. Overall, this much-needed atlas is of high quality, both in its images and in its text, figures, and tables. I feel that this book is a great reference and would be an excellent addition to any mouse pathologist’s library."--Veterinary Pathology, 49(5), page 886

Still a bit rough.
By sam
Working in a field where translational research is very important, I was excited about this book and had some expectations. I really liked the idea of having a book with great images to point my finger on and say: "Look, that's the difference!"

So far I spend a few hours looking at/reading the book, and it satisfies me only in some aspects.

First of all, the authors claim that the atlas "will introduce readers to many of the unique differences between mouse and human gross and histologic anatomy." But browsing, the histology images are rather dominant and the gross anatomy images are mostly from netterimages.com (so, if you study or work in the respective field, you have probably seen them before. As these images have not been drawn just for this book, there is a marked difference in style. This makes it difficult to tell whether the less detailed information in the mouse images is due to real difference in structure or difference in display.

Another problem I have with the images is the missing size indicator. The authors give this explanation: "The difference in sizes between mouse and human body, organs, and tissues makes it challenging to capture subgross and histologic images at the same magnification because this would result in poorly oriented and minuscule mouse images. Instead, we have optimized magnifications for ease of visualization, most often capturing mouse images at a higher magnification than human. There are notable exceptions where we have noted original magnifications or commented on the sizing differences. Micrometer bars are not included on the majority of images because they are distracting and irrelevant."
I agree that the images have to be adjusted in size, but the last sentence is nonsense. The missing size bars make comparison with other imaging modalities difficult and the only reason I can see to not show them is that it is a lot of work to track magnification of images and have it correctly displayed.

This leads to my last criticism. I think the book looks a bit rough overall. The normal font size is too large for my taste and not justified and there is no persistent layout to the images and labelling.
I also found two figures that got obviously mixed up in the cardio section and I could not find contact information to tell somebody about the mistake (which actually makes me write this review, as I just have to say something about this book, NOW!). Despite the lacking information the authors claim: "We suspect that most of our critical readers will be pathologists and will be vociferously opinionated. We welcome their opining along with suggestions for improvement."
On the positive side, I like the online access you get when buying the hard copy (all citations I give in this review are taken from there). I also like the tables to sum up differences and I acknowledge that gathering the presented information is not an easy task.

Conclusion: I give this book a two star rating for layout and content, but add another one for filling the gap in between mouse and human anatomy for translational research. However, if you are not in desperate need for a book like this, maybe wait for the second edition...

what this was great!
By Amazon Customer
You have got to be kidding this book was awesome! It is was it says it is a comparative guide, the online expertconsult allows you to pull up sited literature for each chapter. Great pictures, links you to Netter pictures so you print those off too. Excellent lab reference with current protocol. I am still looking for another more in depth mouse histology, and there is no such beast under 300$.

Wow!

I have yet to go through it all, but at first glance this textbook is amazing! So many beautifully detailed diagrams of organs in each species with corresponding histology and photography. So glad I purchased this textbook! This will definitely be reference I'll go back to when starting new research projects.

Bait: Off-Color Stories for You to Color, by Chuck Palahniuk

New York Times bestselling novelist Chuck Palahniuk presents Bait: Off-Color Stories for You to Color, his first ever coloring book for adults. Bait is both the coloring book debut and the second short story collection for Palahniuk, author of Lullaby and Fight Club. The 8.5 x 11 inch hardcover album contains eight bizarre tales, illustrated in detailed black and white by Joƫlle Jones (Lady Killer), Lee Bermejo (The Suiciders), Duncan Fegredo (Hellboy), and more. Each story is paired with pieces of colorable original art, nearly 50 in all!

Palahniuk invites readers to collaborate on this unprecedented hardcover edition: "Maybe between your colors, the artists' designs, and my stories we can create something that endures. Something worth keeping. Let's create a well-bound book that can sit on any shelf and be available for a new generation to discover and enjoy."

Palahniuk's short stories are provocative and not for the faint of heart. (His public readings are notorious for making audience members pass out.) Kirkus Reviews described Palahniuk's 2015 short story collection Make Something Up: Stories You Can't Unread as "Pathos and panic and penitence from one of the darkest and most singular minds in contemporary American lit."

Bait continues in that vein with stories about:
A passenger on the Titanic who finds a surgical solution to the obstacle of "women and children first". A Hollywood star whose fading brand faces a viral (and scatological) internet campaign. An animal psychic who coaxes a statement from a fish that witnessed a political assassination. Increasingly terrible birthday gifts that place a girl at the center of an extinction-level event.

Reviews for 2015's Make Something Up:

"Palahniuk finds sincerity among his characters even in disreputable occurrences."-- Publishers Weekly

"He makes it absolutely clear that he's still the man who wrote 'Guts,' the infamous story that made fans pass out at readings." --Kirkus Reviews

Reviews for Fight Club 2:

"At turns deeply poignant and very funny, Palahniuk's freakish fables capture a twisted zeitgeist and add an oddly inspirational and subversive voice to the contemporary canon . . . In the post-9/11 present, a hyperactive, Internet-obsessed, war- and recession-weary America apparently needs Tyler again."--The Atlantic

"Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club 2 is as much a kinetic read as it is a pivotal watermark for the comic industry to receive such a high-profile cross-media debut. We are Jack's eager eyes."--Paste
