Subsequently, on a trip to New York, she meets Martin Luther King, Jr., who asks her to become his coordinator in the North, and she visits black churches all over America to help support King’s Poor People’s March.

But once again tragedy strikes. King is assassinated, and this time Angelou completely withdraws from the world, unable to deal with this horrible event. Finally, James Baldwin forces her out of isolation and insists that she accompany him to a dinner party—where the idea for writing I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is born. In fact, A Song Flung Up to Heaven ends as Maya Angelou begins to write the first sentences of Caged Bird.

The impact of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (which evoked the author's adolescence and sexual abuse in Arkansas) was unprecedented. It combined frankness and emotional force with a nuanced, poetic style--a style that Angelou has perhaps found more elusive recently. But it's here again, as affecting as ever. The book deals with the years 1964-68, a turbulent period in which Angelou came back to America after her African sojourn. Adult/High School-Far from a textbook account, this final volume in the writer's series of six memoirs takes readers into the heart of the civil rights movement. Angelou begins in 1964. When she replanted her feet in America to help Malcolm X, she admittedly left a piece of her heart in Ghana with her son. She was also developing artistically during this time, and finding the means by which to express herself to her country and in her community. Any YA who has aimed to accomplish something meaningful and met with personal loss or the disappointment of bad timing, will identify with her. Before she was able to help Malcolm X form the Organization of African-American Unity, he was assassinated. Her mother and protective brother buttressed her spirits, and encouraged her to move forward. From San Francisco to Hawaii and back to California she takes readers into an economically depressed area in Los Angeles before, during, and after it burned. Her next giant step will be appreciated by YAs with an artistic side. She describes performing and writing plays for an African-American theater. Later, after she moved to New York, her pal James Baldwin and others instrumental in changing the view of America in the 1960s are featured prominently. History was in the making and Angelou was in the midst of it as this worthwhile autobiography attests.

If you are an Angelou fan, that is, you've read all of her autobiographical work and are familiar with a wide range of her poetry and essays, then you are bound to be torn by her latest autobiographical piece, "A Sung Flung Up To Heaven." Although the writing is vibrant and accessible as usual, her story seems to be missing any new insights, or wisdom. There is very little in this writing that she hasn't said in previous accounts. There were sections of the book that appeared to be reiterated from previous work, yet the author seems to hold back when writing about the death of Malcom X and Dr. M. L. King. I thought for sure that Angelou's memory of those events would be told with more vivid detail and personal reflection.
Overall, the book is an easy and interesting read. As a huge fan, I'm always excited to devour any of Angelou's work. I'm usually fully satiated by the experience, in this case however; I'm not as full as I could be and another helping of Angelou is in order.

Good thing it's 40% off, not much content

I would never think of Maya Angelou as lazy, but this book seems like it was scribbled over a weekend. The book itself is small, the type is big, the margins are very wide. If it were printed like a normal hardcover, it would be about 85 pages long. How disappointing that the author of five remarkable and beautiful volumes of autobiography has done such a lightweight, impressionistic job on number 6. I wanted to know so much more. Here's hoping she sits down and really works hard on number 7.

Angelou is like Butter!

I am continually thrilled to catch up on Maya Angelou's life...or should I say her many lives all joined together in one!
Her life as a child in Stamps Arkansas, her life as a prostitute, dancer, singer, actor, her life in Africa, her life as a black activist, her life after Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, and her life now. 74 and still rising.
Rising.
And the dinner parties! I feel I have been to all of them. The delectable food, rich conversation, and guests to die for. I was there!
"A Song Flung Up To Heaven"
brings the reader on another journey...from Africa to the
United States. We meet Malcolm X briefly and Martin L. King...before they are assassinated.
We walk the dark, smoky, streets of Watts. We meet racism face to face, smell the reality of it.
And we meet "The African" (what a mysterious, sexy title)
this is what Angelou calls her African lover.
She describes him as intellegent, sexy, brilliant, astonishingly handsome, funny,
"And he loved me."
When he arrives in the United States she describes him again...
"When he walked in he was very beautiful and very black."
I love that!
Angelou is devastated by the assassinations of Malcolm X and Martin L. King...
"Some words are spoken and not heard because the ears cannot
hear them."
There is an image in the book which stayed w/me of a black man walking around Watts bare chested with a drum around his neck...pounding and yelling. No songs or music, just pounding and yelling.
Like hope had dyed.
But Maya's friend tells her this:
"You know how we survived, Maya? We put surviving into our poems and our songs, in our folf tales, we danced surviving in congo square, and put it in our pots when we cooked pinto beans,we clothed ourselves in the colors of the rainbow..."
"Song" is not a book about hopelessness. It is a book about surviving, living, loving, singing, dancing, and rising above the very depths of dispair.
Maya uses an African phrase, (KO NE BRA)
which means
"Go and Come"

About the Author
Research and teaching interests involve financial and managerial accounting. He and Professor Ross L. Watts received American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Awards in 1979 and 1980 for their joint papers. He received the American Accounting Association award for Seminal Contribution to Accounting Literature in 2004. He was the 1978 winner of the Competitive Manuscript Award, sponsored by the American Accounting Association, for his paper, "The Costs and Benefits of Cost Allocation." His research, which has come to be called "positive theories of accounting," seeks to understand the costs and benefits of various accounting procedures. He and Watts co-authored a book, Positive Accounting Theory, published by Prentice-Hall in 1986.

Research and teaching interests in the economics of organizations, corporate governance and compensation policy, corporate finance, franchising and banking. From 1989 to 1991, he was chairman of the Finance Department and research director at he University of Utah's Garn Institute of Finance. Professor Brickley was chairman of he Committee on MBA Programs from 1994-1997.

I did not find this book useful for me as I have had no prior economics ...

My Economics professor assigned this book for his course. I did not find this book useful for me as I have had no prior economics education prior to this MBA course. The graphs and equations were less than helpful, the book read more like a novel than an instructional textbook to help me learn. I ended up purchasing additional economics books and watching YouTube videos to understand the concepts from this textbook.

Not best textbook

Book acted more like a novel book in my opinion. The text book was confusing and hard to follow. It did offer great examples and relate to current and popular companies which helps to retain and relate information. Overall didn't feel it as as effective as other textbooks I've read in the past

Can't have our cake and eat it too...

We can't have our cake and eat it too, according to Tim Jackson. While many (or even most) people are convinced that "technology" and ever-increasing efficiencies will allow humankind, and especially us Rich World folks, to live green and still live large, this books demonstrates in well-documented detail the fallacy of this way of thinking. For instance, while we are getting more production for any carbon we emit into the atmosphere (25 percent more efficient globally in the past 40 years), our actual carbon output is up by 80 percent, as more people are finding more ways to burn fossil fuels--in effect overwhelming any impact from being more efficient.

Jackson is thorough in documenting our overuse of important materials such as copper, bauxite and iron ore, which he points out, if the rest of the world used like we do, world supplies would be exhausted within 20 years. He is also quick to note that not only are we exhausting the planet's physical storehouse and storage capacity for things like carbon, we are at the same time driving a large wedge between the haves and have-nots of the world. And more wealth won't solve these inequities: per capita income in the US is some $42,000 per year, yet the US has the largest income stratification of any rich nation.

He blames much of our problem on "novelty"--the pursuit of the new thing. This creates a throwaway society as product after product is "up-graded" for the next model; it also creates persistent anxiety among and between citizens as they strive for acceptance and supremacy via things. He feels that the goal of society should be to create a world that is environmentally sustainable and that focuses on helping people flourish--neither of which can be accomplished in a highly competitive capitalistic society whose mantra is "more." He calls for both local and national initiatives to redefine life, rewarding behaviors that promote the goals mentioned above.

useful restatement of many good arguments

A useful re-statement of all the good arguments made over the past 40 years for transforming public policy beyond erroneous economic models. Summarizes the debate and the conclusions on the need to move to low-entropy models based on better understanding of real human needs and goals of equitable, ecologically sustainable prosperity. Some strange omissions, including E. F. Schumacher's Small Is Beautiful (1973) in its heavily focused British literature and the ascribing of the European Commission and the European Parliaments Beyond GDP conferences in 2007 ([...]) to the OECD. A good introduction for those unfamiliar with this 40-year old debate.

It was going well but....

It is a good book, well written. The first part, where the author makes the case for the unsustainablility of the "growth model" of the economy was very well written. It cannot be said the same about the second part of the book, which was how will be possible the revert and fix the problem. I understand perfectly that it was the most difficult part of the book, and that such a complex matter cannot be fully covered in one book, but I was expecting something more than wishful thinking.
Anyway, it is a book worth reading.

Simon Kloostra’s book, Joomla! 3 SEO and Performance, is a very focused, short book that is chock full of useful tips and links to resources that Joomla! website developers and administrators may not be aware of. As a long-time Joomla! user and founding member of the Northern Virginia Joomla! Users Group, I find that this book fills a gap on my Joomla! bookshelf.
Simon Kloostra (see his site at joomlaseo.com) is clearly an authority on Joomla! and SEO, but he avoids unnecessary jargon, provides context, and explains SEO in a clear and pleasant style. As of the date of this review, the book is quite current. It includes evaluations of and recommendations for dozens of resources to consider for your toolkit.
One frequent question in user group meetings is which commercial template provider is best. This book does get specific and list well-regarded template providers, and also delves into the SEO considerations of template design. This which gives the site developers something more to consider in making their template selection or development decisions.

A Divine Message for All People

If there is a message that can break through to a large portion of our population, this is it. What I mean by break through...to reach people regardless of religious tradition (or lack of one), social class and whatever it is that we believe makes us special and unique. "God Has Spoken Again" shows us a reality in which we live in but often do not see; the decline of the world's resources and stability, growing religious competition that is leading to war and the internal crisis we all face--living separate from God and the truth the God has instilled within us. But what I also find within is a way forward-not just intellectual solutions or good ideas, but a way for each of us to embrace this life and live strongly, powerfully in the face of so much challenge and strife. This communication (I hesitate to call it a book), sounds a calling to me, to come out of my sleepy dream of reality and enter into a world I have never seen before, but one that I am perfectly designed to participate in. I know and feel that God has spoken again. God's words and wisdom are conveyed in every line here. But will the human family receive it deeply enough and in time for it to inspire action, commitment and service at a level we have never experienced before but so desperately need?

Provides a new revelation of life from a higher vantage point

Excellent source of clear wisdom and cutting insight for living in a changing world. I give it five stars because it stands apart from all other spiritual texts i have explored over the years. It provides a new revelation of life from a higher vantage point and not just a new interpretation of life as we know it. For this reason, "God Has Spoken Again" is a must read that I will go back to again and again for assistance and clarity in these times of change.

Good Intro to International Economics

I used this book for my international economics undergraduate course and found it easy to understand; it doesn't use lengthy mathematical formulas but utilizes basic macroeconomic theories. The authors organized this book well; the later chapters build upon the beginning ones. However, it would be best to have taken Intermediate Macroeconomics before using this book because the last few chapters rely heavily on a good understanding of intermediate level material.

About the Author

Chef Solla Eiríksdóttir is the owner of Gló in Reykjavik – Iceland’s most popular vegetarian and raw-food restaurant. She opened Gló twenty years ago and today runs five successful restaurants, an organic market, and has her own organic food brand, which is sold in grocery stores and supermarkets across Iceland. She has published five cookbooks, co-authored others, and has written many articles on organic food. She taught vegetarian cooking on television and she gives demonstrations every year at The Longevity conference in Los Angeles. She is an enthusiastic advocate of an organic and sustainable lifestyle, and has helped to make both vegetarianism and the raw food movement more mainstream and widely available in Iceland. Her restaurant and cuisine has gained an international reputation seeing Solla win the best RAW Gourmet Chef award in 2011 and 2012.

Health food with a vegan/raw bias and some very interesting creative from Iceland ... complete with gorgeous landscape photos

Disclaimer: my tastes run in a more locavore, less powdered supplement ... more towards a millet congee than a green smoothie for breakfast. So my first reaction glancing through the cookbook was not positive. But I've been exploring Icelandic/Nordic cuisine recipes and soon discovered that the cookbook has some interesting recipes - some real gems hidden among the food-sectarian vegan/raw/health food recipes.

The first recipes to catch my attention were some basic fermentation recipes - Icelandic Kimchi: cabbage, bell pepper, radish, carrot, cauliflower in cider vinegar, tamari, coconut palm sugar, ginger, garlic, chili - and interesting variant. Two family recipes - fermented carrots with spices and fermented beets both show an originality in spicing that encourage further exploration.

Spiralized vegetables with kale pesto is a typical modern take (minus the nutriutional yeast) which becomes interesting because of the base vegetables - rutabaga, carrot, beet and zucchini. Using turnip slices as "tortillas" for avocado and nut tacos results in a flavorful and beautiful plate. Beets are featured broadly: Beet and Sweet Potato Soup; Beautiful Raw Root Salad; Baked Beet Bowl ... Cabbage appears frequently and stars in Thai Slaw with almond butter and kaffir lime juice in the dressing.

In short this is an inventive cook who knows how to maximize the usefulness of plants ... down to composting directions for those last bits and piece.
